Protecting Against Invasive Species

Lake Host Program:

Crescent Lake Association participates in the Lake Host Program from NH Lakes, which organizes local Lake Hosts to offer complimentary inspections of boats entering and leaving the water at the boat ramp in Acworth. Lake Hosts are trained to find and remove invasive vegetation such as milfoil or invasive organisms such as zebra mussels. They also offer boaters educational material about invasive species and the Clean, Drain, and Dry technique for aquatic invasive species prevention.

CLA’s Lake Host program has been in operation for more than 20 years and typically conducts more than 1,000 motorboat, trailer, canoe, and kayak inspections each season. The boat ramp is staffed on weekends beginning in May, with coverage expanding to seven days a week from mid-June through early September.

Over the years, our Lake Hosts have made a number of documented “saves”, preventing invasive species from entering Crescent Lake. Although more than 100 lakes in New Hampshire have confirmed various invasive species (primarily milfoil), the rate of new infestations has slowed dramatically thanks in large part to the Lake Host program.

Funding for this program comes from CLA dues, the towns of Acworth and Unity, and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services via NH Lakes.
